Oral pathology and biopsies

Oral pathology means disease in the mouth.

This may include infections, jaw cysts, lumps, lesions, white patches and cancer.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is highly trained to diagnose and treat abnormalities within the mouth, jaws and face.

Commonly performed procedures include:

  • Removal of jaw cyst
  • Removal of mucocoeles (salivary retention cysts)
  • Biopsies to diagnose and remove lumps and lesions of the mouth and lips
  • Removal of skin lesions
  • Removal of facial skin lesions is an extension of oral pathology and may also be undertaken by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
